About this hotel

Prepare for a dose of serious minimalist Milanese glamour when you step through the door of Riad Numa. This is a truly urban pad that pays respect to raw materials and the riad’s classical proportions while allowing the bespoke designer furnishings to shine.

Location

Buried in the absolute heart of the souks just minutes from buzzing Place des Epices and five minutes’ walk from the Djemaa el-Fna. Once you have your bearings, this is an awesome location very close to some great shops and restaurants, including Riad Yima Tea House, Nomad and Shtatto. First timers will either find this spot brilliantly exciting or stressful and confusing. The closest place to pick up taxis is the Djemaa el-Fna.

Ambiance and Design

The décor at Numa is exciting and the vibe is sophisticated without being stuffy. Entering from the hot, dusty souk you’re plunged into a hushed, midnight blue corridor. A bright doorway at the end draws you forward into a brilliant white patio paved with polished white terrazzo and planted with two verdant green citrus trees. It’s beautiful, still and peaceful. Along one side there’s an open-air lounge set with a chic dining table and leaf chairs, a sofa, velvet pouffs and a fireplace. Two staircases disappear upstairs, creating flow and space. The rooms, too, are sleek without being boring. They are fitted with bespoke brass lights and wardrobes, well-chosen furniture and large beds dressed in pristine white linens. Then there’s a sizeable plunge pool set in a sun spot on the first floor, while the roof terrace is laid with punchy green loungers and mosaic-topped tables where glam guests linger over breakfast.

Service and Amenities

The riad is owned by Milanese transplants Mauro and Claudia who have a background in design and their aesthetic sensibility shows in everything from the top-notch coffee to the smart service. They are also very hands on and go out of their way to help guests with shopping tips, day trips and even picnic bags for early airport transfers. Working alongside them are three members of staff who are friendly and on the ball.

The first-floor pool is a real highlight and is large for a Medina mansion. Raised up, it also sits in a sun spot for most of the day. There’s no on-site restaurant, but some of Marrakech’s best dining options are on the doorstep, which gives the riad the feel of a fashionable pied-a-terre.

Suites and Rooms

There are six lovely bedrooms, two double rooms and four suites. They have an air of uncomplicated elegance, the focus being on a few well-designed pieces of bespoke furniture, top quality beds and beautifully finished terrazzo floors and tadelakt (polished plaster) walls. The lack of clutter makes them feel calm and cool. Colour is used sparingly, but to dramatic effect, such as the bright green zellij tiles in the shower of Suite Six or the dark charcoal floor of Suite Four. Bathrooms are also well configured and have large showers, contemporary fittings, chic bath linen and organic Botanika products.

Hospitality and Cuisine

Breakfast, which is served on the sunny roof terrace or in the open-sided salon downstairs, is simple and flavourful. Perfectly fresh seasonal fruit is followed by Moroccan beghir (pancakes) and bread hot from the bakery. There’s also an endless supply of excellent coffee served from a proper espresso machine. Dinner needs to be ordered in advance and involves well-executed traditional Moroccan dishes such as Moroccan salads, tagine and couscous. And, on occasion, a rather super feast of homemade Italian ragù.

Value for Money

Double rooms from €140 ($247) in low season; and from €160 ($299) in high. Breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi.

Special Needs Access

Not suitable.

Is this place family-friendly?

Not really. This is a chic place favoured by couples and urbanites. In addition, the stairs are steep and the pool area is restricted and unguarded. That said, two of the suites can accommodate a third bed.

An Oasis with Amazing Staff

Had an incredible 5 night stay at Numa. It is an intimate Riad smack in the middle of the médina. An oasis from the busyness outside. But what really sets this place apart is the staff. It felt like staying at home with friends. They anticipated your needs and were super helpful, recommended the best restaurants and sites and went above and beyond. The owner literally walked me to a stall to buy nuts. I had no expectations arriving here but left with so much love and respect for them all. Thank you Mauro, Yousef, and Ismail.

Unbelievable Place with Wonderful Staff

Absolutely unbelievable place hidden in the winding streets of Medina, yet a short walk from the main square. Fantastic decor with attention to detail, clean. The staff is polite, smiling, always helpful. What's more, you have the impression that the staff is ahead of the needs of the guest by offering drinks, fruits, freshly brewed tea. And at the end of our stay, they offered quick help in reaching the car rental company. Breakfast is plentiful and very tasty. A truly wonderful place and marvelous people. We will definitely be back.

Wonderful Stay in the Heart of Medina

We had a wonderful 6 night stay at Numa. The Riad is beautifully designed and very centrally located in the heart of the Medina and close to a few good restaurants. The staff were warm, friendly and super helpful. They even helped us to find a great guide for the Atlas Mountains. Would absolutely stay again.

A Unique Blend of Styles

Adored this beautiful, homey riad in Marrakech. Of all the places we stayed while traveling in Morocco, this was the best hands down. The Italian couple who own the place decorated it themselves with a beautiful mix of minimalist Italian style and traditional Moroccan materials that make it both cool and homey at the same time. The employees at the place were truly fantastic people, and we had a wonderful stay. I highly recommend it!

Absolutely Wonderful Stay!

An absolutely wonderful stay! I wish we could stay longer so I’m already planning to come back! The riad is gorgeous and perfectly located! A quick walk to everything you need! The breakfast was delicious! What makes this place so special is the people. Mauro made booking and transportation to the riad so easy. Omar was so kind to help us with our bags! Youssef was a treasure in arranging our dinner reservations and hummam! He was constantly available for us and went above and beyond! I can’t wait to return!

Disappointing Experience with Management

Numa is a big mistake and a greedy management: they refused to reimburse us after the September earthquake and even refused a coupon that we could have used later. We booked a night at Numa through booking and after the earthquake, we decided it was not the right time to visit Morocco. We knew that by the violence of it, even three weeks after (when we were supposed to visit) many people were still trying to find their closed ones and starting a long healing journey. We thus felt enjoying the luxury of Morocco was really misplaced. We reached out to Numa and they refused to arrange anything. They told us everything was right on their side (which is obviously good news) but argued she should still pay even if we did not go. They shamefully said we had to support Morocco: Numa, you are not Morocco and you are ok. We would have given this money to any cause of your choice to support people who actually needed it. You are a greedy place. You should feel ashamed.

Stylish and Serene Getaway

A beautiful, stylish and serene Riad in the middle of the medina. The rooms and terraces were charming and exceptionally well maintained. The plunge pool and sun beds gave a welcome opportunity to cool off and relax. Breakfast was delicious. Staff were friendly and attentive without ever being overbearing. I would love to return.

A Perfect Base for Marrakech

An oasis from the chaos. I stayed here for one night as a base for exploring the souks of Marrakech. It was more beautiful than imagined and the staff could not have been more helpful. They went above and beyond by allowing us a choice of rooms on a particularly quiet night, organising late night tuk tuks and restaurant reservations and even walking our luggage to the car (a 10 min walk away). The perfect base for your Marrakech trip!

Exceptional Service at Numa Riad

The Numa riad and its staff went over and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect. The staff would guide us to various destinations albeit a 15 minute walk. Also, the staff recommended stellar restaurants and Hamams which would otherwise be difficult to find. Thanks!

Amazing and Beautiful Riad

Riad Nuba was amazing. Beautiful Riad that is very well located. It’s a little tricky to find it initially, but the little hidden spot has the advantage of a quiet oasis next to this impulsive city. Everything was clean and very beautifully designed. The breakfast we booked additionally was fantastic. I would come every time back!

Beautifully Renovated and Welcoming

The pictures previously are before many new renovations. The lobby and rooms are absolutely beautiful. There are birds singing, lots of natural light and the sound of running water from the small but beautiful pool. The owner is a wonderful expat from Milan, Italy who greets you personally. The best experience in Morocco so far. Beats out all the large and impersonal Riad experiences. Value far exceeds the shockingly low price. I think I also must point out that the road is only two years old, the furnishings are very modern, chic lamps and chandeliers, gorgeous bathroom that is super clean, great shower, the BEST hand cream in town and the most comfortable bed I have been in for weeks now.
