About this hotel

This smart, five-bedroom riad is located in one of the best parts of the medina, and was formerly a family holiday home. As a result, it still enjoys a warm, welcoming, familial atmosphere. Photogenic corners include a beautifully decorated bhou and a plunge pool shaded by tall palms and banana trees.

Hotel/Riad Location

Located in one of the Medina’s best neighbourhoods, just a few hundred metres from Dar el Bacha, the king’s second palace. From here, it’s a five-minute walk to the Djemaa el Fna and 10 minutes to the Medersa Ben Youssef. Pick up taxis at Dar el Bacha.

Accomodation’s Design

This boutique guesthouse is highly personal and intimate. It’s the one-time home of Leonardo Giangreco, who is often found at the riad chatting with guests. A deep turquoise plunge pool sits at the centre of the small patio and is shaded by tall palms and verdant green banana trees. Set around it are various living spaces: a beautifully decorated bhou (seating nook), an open sided portico furnished with long dining table and a rather glamorous L-shaped living room.

The latter has a comfortable television-watching corner, a good stock of books and an epic fireplace. It also has the most stunning cedarwood ceiling and is furnished invitingly with plum-coloured velvet sofas and red kilims. The bedrooms are upstairs, which keeps them nice and secluded.

Services and Amenities

Jaaneman was a family home for over 10 years before it was converted into a boutique guesthouse so while the facilities are comfortable they are limited. The plunge pool is more of a decorative feature than a pool and massages are possible on request.

That said, manager Madeline and her team of five staff are fantastically welcoming and knowledgeable about Marrakech’s nooks and crannies so they can fix you up with appointments at nearby hammams, restaurant bookings and even help you plan excursions.

Suites and Rooms

There are five large and quiet bedrooms decorated in an international style that mixes Moroccan, European and African artefacts. The pick of the bunch is Leale, a duplex suite that wraps around its own pretty secluded patio which is shaded by fan palms and features an impressive wall fountain.

The riad’s Italian ownership is evident in the huge bathroom with its Boffi fittings, cut Carrara marble sink and contrasting charcoal grey tadelakt finish. The other four rooms are on the first floor and are subtle, bright and secluded with feature bathrooms decked out in green, red and brown marbles and boldly-coloured tadelakt. Complimentary water, fruit and Les Sens de Marrakech toiletries are supplied.

Hospitality and Cuisine

A typical Moroccan breakfast of fruit salad, pancakes, crêpes and honey is served on the roof terrace beneath the shady pergola. There’s no restaurant as such, but dinner is provided on request and can be served on the roof terrace or in the main courtyard beneath the portico. The food is classic home cooked Moroccan food, including a range of tasty tagines and couscous.
