About this hotel

A hip hideaway housed in a towering riad with a panoramic terrace: Italian photographer Giovanna Cinel has brought a dash of Milanese moda to Riad 72, a traditional Medina mansion complete with two secluded courtyards, a hammam and a well-regarded Italian-Moroccan restaurant.

Location

Very well located in an upmarket part of the Medina, between the Dar el Bacha palace and the Bab Doukkala gate. While the riad is tucked down a quiet alley, it is very easy to find and car access is close by. The souks, Djemaa el Fna, Jardin Majorelle and Medersa Ben Youssef are all within 15-20 minutes’ walk, while the restaurants in the Ville Nouvelle are a short taxi ride away.

Ambiance and Design

In Marrakech, as in Milan, home is not so much where the heart is, but where the social scene is. As such, a deliciously stylish interior is a must if you’re going to host guests in style. This home-as-stage-set ethos is something that Milanese owner Giovanna Cinel understands perfectly, hence Riad 72’s wonderfully photogenic main patio with its starburst marquetry tables orbiting beneath the fronds of tall banana palms.

In the main salon, a louche red velvet sofa beckons bookworms while romancing dinners relax in the soft glow cast by giant lanterns. The second, smaller patio has a different, cooler tone, with an open-air lounge furnished with vintage Deco pieces and a roaring log fire overlooking an exquisitely tiled patio in rose-and-taupe zellij, which took a year to lay. So beautiful is the finish, you might be tempted to forego the terrace, but you’d be missing out. It’s one of the tallest in Marrakech and offers a wonderful spread of space for lounging, sunbathing and dining.

Service and Amenities

Giovanna, who has lived in Marrakech for many years, and her general manager, Stephania, are thoughtful and professional hosts as is evinced by the personal greeting on arrival, the highly professional and friendly staff, the personalised map filled with interesting recommendations and the complimentary mobile phone. There’s also a small house hammam and a massage room, while two of the suites also have rather decadent rooftop whirlpool baths.

Suites and Rooms

The Elle Deco dream continues upstairs in the 13 bedrooms, all of them individually decorated with high-quality artworks, luxurious fabrics and super comfortable beds. Some are split over two floors, while others show-off original cedarwood ceilings. Beautiful textiles and rich colours are used to great effect, holding together a decorative scheme that blends a choice selection of traditional Moroccan furniture with vintage, Deco lamps and design pieces by the likes of Cappellini.

Furthermore, everything works superbly making for an overall impression of artful, effortless elegance. Depending on the room, bathrooms come with rain showers or designer bathtubs, separate toilets, well-conceived wardrobes and oodles of Nectarome organic products. The pièce de résistance are the three suites. The Grand Suite boasting a fabulous cedarwood ceiling trimmed with stucco; while the Arte and Junior Suites benefit from private roof terraces and whirlpool baths.

Hospitality and Cuisine

Breakfast is served anywhere from the roof terrace to your bedroom. It consists of pastries, homemade breads, jams, fruit, yogurt and a selection of cooked items. Lunch served on the terrace beneath the pergola is a real highlight and mixes up vegetarian soups with burgers, salads and grilled turkey with Batbout bread.

Dinner needs to be booked in advance as the restaurant is open to the public in the evening. Mustapha’s evening menu consists of modern style tagines (which are lighter than the traditional version) with chicken or meatballs, lamb with pomegranate, or seabass with sautéed artichokes. With an Italian at the helm, you can also expect tiramisu and good homemade ice creams.
