This 19th-century former riad, the city’s only Relais & Chateaux property, offers a luxurious five-star hotel stay in the heart of the medina. The hotel’s traditional interiors are colourful and cosy, while a bijou spa and unmissable rooftop pool lend a stylish edge.
Built into the wall of the old city just next to the Bab Marrakech gate, the hotel is an ideal base from which to explore the souks, restaurants and shops of the old city, and the Kasbah area nearby, with its historic 18th-century cannons, offering the best views over the port. It’s also located steps from the Supratours terminal, where visitors can access direct bus services to Marrakech, and nearby beaches.
Elegant and full of colonial charm, with velvet furnishings, large plants, candle-lit lamps, wicker chairs and large plants dotted around a calming water fountain forming a centrepiece in the hotel’s courtyard.
It is the only building in the old city with a rooftop pool, offering the best views over the old city and out to sea. There is a small spa offering various treatments (from £31 per half-hour session) including a hammam and an invigorating verbena-infused oil body massage. Other facilities include a billiards room and cinema room. The warm, keen and welcoming staff are quick to respond to any queries or requests.
The cosy and comfortable rooms have been inspired by African, Arab-Portuguese and Asian themes, furnished with dark wood interiors and earthy tones with touches of red, mustard yellow and subtle blue, and striking Moroccan floor tiles, as well as marble bathrooms and walk-in showers. Arched window frames, curved ceilings, and wooden double doors and shutters lend a subtle chapel-like feel. The premium and family suites feature a small built-in fireplace.
The atmospheric candle-lit Salon Oriental restaurant features bold Moroccan carpets and red velvet chairs, while the cosy Salon Anglais has a British colonial era feel, furnished with plush chesterfield sofas and a bull head wall piece. Both offer a seasonal menu of hearty Moroccan and European-inspired fare, such as foie gras with black truffle ravioli, lamb with Berber couscous and a whiting fish tagine, all prepared with organically-farmed vegetables. Mains from £13.
No. The entrance to the hotel is a narrow doorway and the hotel’s two box-like lifts feel too small to accommodate wheelchairs.
Extra beds can be added to any rooms to accommodate children (£16 per bed for under-12-year-olds and £31 per bed for those aged 12 and over). But the hotel’s mature vibe and facilities make it more suitable for adults.
