About this hotel

A surf-and-yoga camp meets boutique hotel with a community vibe, stylish Berber-inspired interiors and an infinity pool that has views of surfer-dotted swell. There is nothing like coming back here after a day being barrelled by waves.

Location

The hotel is located on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, in Taghazout, a laid-back hippie surfer town. It’s just a short walk from the region’s headline break, Anchor Point, with a dozen more popular spots for all surfing levels within easy reach, such as Killers, Camel Beach, Devil’s Point and Boilers. It’s around an hour’s drive to Agadir airport. Hotel transfers are included in most packages.

Ambiance and Design

It’s bohemian, but stylishly considered. All the furniture has been sourced from local souks and markets, from the shaggy and colourful Berber rugs (available to buy from a rug maker who comes to the hotel every Monday and Thursday), to the bespoke industrial-style metal chandeliers and egg-shaped hanging chair, which were made by local metalworkers. The colourful art that adorns the walls is by artists who have previously stayed at Surf Maroc. Cacti and huge palms punctuate rooms and public areas.

The place has been designed for those coming back from a day of surfing, and so there are plenty of places to sit, read and relax, such as the hammocks by the pool and the colourful floor cushions by the roaring fire in the bar. There’s also a weekly film night when a cinema screen and projector is set up in the garden.

Service and Amenities

It’s a genuinely happy welcome and whoever’s on front desk is always ready to help with bookings, recommendations or – in my case – rehydration salts. The senior members of staff have an uncanny way of remembering everyone’s name. The bar staff are ever-smiling and will happily chat to you about waves while making your cocktail or coffee.

You come here for surfing and so the facilities correspond – wetsuit and board hire is included in your package (they can be picked up from Surf Maroc’s nearby Café Mouja), and there’s a communal wet room at the hotel to store them. There’s plenty for days off surfing too: as well as the sea-facing infinity pool, there’s a spa with a decent treatment menu (including a highly-recommend 15-minute ‘surf massage’) and traditional hammam. A pool table is good for rainy days.

The rooftop is where the daily sunrise and sunset yoga takes place – highly recommended for those on surfing packages. There are also special workshops, including restorative yoga.

Suites and Rooms

Twenty all-white bedrooms are peppered with colourful injections, such as huge palm plants, velvet mustard desk chairs, colourful beaded ornaments and plenty of shaggy rugs. Many rooms come with Juliette or full balconies – the latter have views over the pool and waves, and come complete with a comfy daybed. Others have floor-to-ceiling windows.

Polished concrete bathrooms include power showers with local orange blossom toiletries, and both pool and bathroom towels are provided. There is also one eight-bed dormitory with two bathrooms.

Hospitality and Cuisine

A nightly communal dinner includes a spread of hearty chicken, fish, beef or vegetarian tagines, plus quinoa salads, sweet potato mash and pasta dishes, followed by dessert and fruit (the vegan avocado chocolate mousse was a highlight). Speciality nights are the best, such as Monday’s Moroccan night (complete with live band), and Thursday’s pool party and barbecue, when you can dine on fish and kebabs. Amouage has the only alcohol license in Taghazout – at the bar you can find decent local wines, spirits and Moroccan beers.

Breakfast is a continental offering of breads, pastries, yoghurts, cheeses and hams, plus shakshouka and omelettes made to order. Packed lunch is provided for those on surfing packages – you make it yourself at the lunch station at breakfast time, with basic ingredients for salads and sandwiches – or there is a hot menu at the bar for those staying at the hotel, including dishes such as burgers and pastas.

Value for Money

Surf Coaching packages are from $809 per person for seven nights in a Mountain room; and from $955 per person in a private Ocean-front double. The package includes return Agadir airport transfers, breakfast, packed lunch, unlimited transport to surfing spots, coaching sessions and all surfing equipment. Dinners ($81pp) and yoga classes ($54pp) are optional add-ons. Free Wi-Fi.

Special Needs Access

Not suitable.

Is this place family-friendly?

Yes. Extra beds can fit into some of the rooms, while there are highchairs and cots for babies. There are also family surf coaching packages available.
